The name Hypersthene was first proposed by geologist Richard Kirwan in 1804. It combines the Greek words “hyper” (meaning “beyond”) and “sthenos” (meaning “strength”), which describe its physical properties of gloss, hardness, and quality that surpass many other minerals.
