HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Selenite is a transparent to translucent gypsum crystal (varying by origin). The English name “Selenite” comes from the Greek word “Selene,” meaning “moon,” because this crystal, when reflecting light, resembles the glow of the moon. In ancient times, it was associated with the Moon Goddess, as its soft and serene glow was seen as similar to moonlight. Because of this, it has been widely used in various spiritual rituals.

Beyond its spiritual significance, selenite had many special uses and meanings in ancient times. The ancient Romans and Egyptians often used selenite to make carvings and windows because its transparent to translucent nature allowed for controlling the amount of light passing through. In ancient Egypt, selenite was used to decorate temples and tombs and was believed to have the ability to purify the soul and mind.
