HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Bloodstone, a dark green chalcedony-based stone with red spots (the larger the red area, the rarer and stronger its healing powers), gets its name from the red iron oxide deposits that resemble blood stains on the surface of the stone. Throughout history and mythology, Bloodstone has been regarded as a powerful protective and healing stone, revered in cultures across the world.

In ancient Greece and Rome, Bloodstone was known as Heliotrope. Greek naturalist Pliny the Elder mentioned Bloodstone in his work Natural History, describing its magical and divine powers, which provided courage and strength to mankind. As a result, it was often used in various rituals of that time.

In medieval Europe, Bloodstone was widely used in medicine. A 13th-century medical text, Herbarium Anglicum, noted that Bloodstone was often ground into powder and used to heal wounds and stop bleeding. While modern medical advancements have developed better methods for treating wounds, and it is not advised to use Bloodstone without proper medical knowledge, its healing energy is still valued today in crystal healing, particularly for restoring and enhancing vitality.
