Not Drunken

In Ancient Greek Mythology, the word "amethyst" originates from the Greek "amethystos," meaning "not drunken." The name is tied to a tale about the god Dionysus. Angry with a mortal, Dionysus vowed to unleash tigers on the next person he encountered. A maiden named Amethyst, en route to honor Diana, faced this danger. To protect her, Diana transformed Amethyst into a pure quartz statue. Remorseful, Dionysus poured wine over the stone, turning it purple and creating the first amethyst crystal. In Greek, "amethyst" means "not drunken," believed to prevent intoxication.

Royalty & Religious Significance

Amethyst has a historical connection with royalty and religious figures. In medieval Europe, it symbolized royalty and adorned monarchs' regalia. Catholic bishops wore amethyst to symbolize piety and celibacy.
